The Volunteer Friendly Award

We involve volunteers because they are motivated, have fun helping and tell us it lets them give something back to the community. Volunteers are crucial to Brae.

East Ayrshire Council’s Leisure Development team is celebrating after picking up a Volunteer Friendly Award for excellence in volunteer management from Volunteer Centre East Ayrshire at an award ceremony held at Kilmarnock’s Ayrshire Athletics Arena.

The team picked up the Volunteer Friendly Award for excellence in volunteer management thanks to the superb work they carry out with their army of volunteers.

They currently engage 60 volunteers and 26 Befrienders who all provide vital support to a wide range of services. Leisure Development works hard ensuring that the needs of the volunteer are always considered, making volunteering with the team a very rewarding experience.

Councillor Kathy Morrice, Spokesperson for Improving Community Health and Wellbeing said: “Volunteers within Leisure Development assist in the delivery of a range of services which are designed to improve the health and wellbeing of people living in East Ayrshire. Our volunteers, aged from 13 – 87 years old, work with all ages from under 5s attending Early Years sessions to older people in Sheltered Accommodation Units. There is a huge range of volunteering opportunities available including outdoor play sessions in parks; befriending a child or young person; carrying out health checks on the CHIP van; admin work in the office; coaching at sports sessions or working with children at SHOUT, CHAMPS, MAX or SOFA clubs.

“Volunteering with Leisure Development is a reciprocal activity – volunteering can improve your health and wellbeing, employability and social life while at the same time you are making a positive difference to the people attending our services”.

In their own words

"We are very pleased to have attained formal recognition that we have good working practices and management systems in place to support our volunteers."
